Each student will propose, develop, and present management results for a project. Students will include but not limited to a communication matrix, cost estimate, risk matrix, work breakdown structure (WBS) by package and by discipline, estimate of engineering hours by task, and a network schedule. Software related projects are recommended to use in this course.

Expectations for the Final Project

The final project is an opportunity for you to apply the knowledge and skills you have gained throughout the course to a real-world simulated problem. The project should demonstrate your ability to manage a software or engineering project from start to finish. The following are the key components that will be evaluated:

  • A clear and concise project description that outlines the problem, objectives, and scope of the project.
  • A detailed project management plan that includes a communication matrix, cost estimate, risk matrix, work breakdown structure (WBS) by package and by discipline, estimate of engineering hours by task, and a network schedule.
  • A well-organized and clearly written final project report that includes appropriate visualizations to support your findings and conclusions.
  • A professional and engaging presentation that effectively communicates your project management plan and results to the class.

For Undergraduate Students

Please form a group of 4 students, and submit a single project report. Each member of the group should contribute to the project and be able to explain their contributions during the presentation. The final project report should include a detailed project management plan. The report should be well-organized and clearly written, with good visualizations to support the work.

Here is an example of the group project member contribution table:

Make sure to clearly define the responsibilities of each group member and ensure that everyone contributes to the project. The final project report should be submitted as a single document, with each member’s contributions clearly indicated.

For Graduate Students

Graduate students are expected to work on an individual project. The final project report should include a detailed project management plan. The report should be well-organized and clearly written, with good visualizations to support the work.

Project Ideas

Some common software project ideas include:

  • A campus navigation app for students that integrates maps, events, and bus schedules.
  • An online store for a local business with payment integration, inventory management, and customer reviews.
  • A patient appointment scheduling and reminder system for a small clinic.
  • An adaptive learning platform for high school math that recommends practice problems based on performance.
  • A city traffic analysis dashboard that shows congestion, travel times, and accident trends using open datasets.
  • A personal finance management app that tracks expenses, budgets, and savings goals.
  • A community event planning website that allows users to create, share, and RSVP to local events.
  • A fitness tracking app that integrates with wearable devices to monitor workouts, nutrition, and health metrics.
  • A recipe sharing platform where users can upload, rate, and comment on cooking recipes.
  • A volunteer coordination system for non-profits to manage events, sign-ups, and communications.
  • A book recommendation app that suggests titles based on user preferences and reading history.
  • A travel itinerary planner that helps users organize trips, book accommodations, and find local attractions.

The examples proposed above can be adapted to develop the project management plan. Please feel free to propose your own software project ideas as well, especially if they align with your personal or professional interests.
